A Design Studio is an award-winning lighting design and manufacturing practice, led by Alex Fitzpatrick. The studio is based in Sydney, Australia, and distributes internationally. The studio’s collections reveal a distinctly expressive approach to transforming space with light, using both traditional skills (glassblowing and metalworking) and contemporary lighting and manufacturing technologies, to find a perfect balance between the scientific and the poetic.

FLATWHITE

FLAT WHITE WALL LIGHT

ADesignStudio | ALEX FITZPATRICK

The idea was to create a functional wall light, a fitting to be enjoyed every day… like your morning coffee… so we called it FlatWhite.

Jokes aside, the FlatWhite is a light fitting that is warm and soft with a smooth tactile quality. The hand blown glass diffuser is detailed with a concave chamfer and acid etch opal finish. Almost non-existent, it sits just off the wall with a cutaway heatsink that fades into the shadows emphasising the most important aspect of this fitting – the light.

CRACKLE

CRACKLE WALL LIGHT

ADesignStudio | ALEX FITZPATRICK

The Greenway Crackle is a natural extension of the Greenway and Eon collections. The resulting design draws on Greenway’s system of lighting components referencing Australia’s historic maritime architecture and infuses it with prolific lighting designer, Richard Kelly’s three principles for lighting.

The Crackle Wall Light is perhaps the most dramatic effect created from the Crackle Glass finish to date. The fitting itself is a gently curving crackle glass form which pushes light back onto the wall in radiating reflections. The light source is a LED with dimmable control options.

CRACKLE

CRACKLE LAMP

ADesignStudio | ALEX FITZPATRICK

For ADesignStudio, the Greenway Crackle is a collection that references Sydney’s maritime architecture while being shaped by experimentation with primitive glass processes.

Greenway Crackle’s glass components are handblown with ADesignStudio’s signature crackle glass finish. The Crackle finish was not initially possible with mould formed glass. Through discussion and experimentation with the glass team, we developed a sequence of events that allowed the forming of glass with the signature crackle finish. It’s inspiring to see how the Gaffer (head glass blower) controls the molten glass. The gaffer can consistently maintain split-second timing, internal and external temperatures of the glass and keep relative consistency in for every piece; all by eye. The rejection of modern technological influence is inherent to the glass blowing process, natural variation is evident in the Greenway Crackle Collection.

Expanding on the pendant range ADesignStudio has added a feature suspension lamp, table lamp and a collection of sconces.

GREENWAY

GREENWAY CRACKLE

ADesignStudio | ALEX FITZPATRICK

The Greenway Crackle is a natural extension of the Greenway and Eon collections. The resulting design draws on Greenway’s system of lighting components referencing Australia’s historic maritime architecture and infuses it with prolific lighting designer, Richard Kelly’s three principles for lighting.

Greenway Crackle’s glass components are handblown into five shapes like the “lantern room” of the Macquarie lighthouse, just as in the original Greenway Collection. The system has been reappointed in ADesignStudio’s custom handblown crackle glass finish which was originally developed for the Eon Sans Collection.

In using the new finish, Greenway Crackle also becomes the embodiment of Richard Kelly’s three principles for ideal lighting conditions, just like the original Eon Collection. First, the metal piece which contains the light source as the “focal glow”. Second, the series of glazed nautical forms as a diffuser to create “ambient luminescence”. Third, the crackle finish adds a “play of brilliance”.

Through a process of evolution, the Greenway Crackle is a distinct new range of lighting.

The Greenway Crackle lighting system can be reconfigured into endless profiles. The collection is currently available in five configurations including the S1 which is a distinctively reduced aesthetic. The light source is a concealed warm LED with dimmable control options.

BASEL

BASEL TABLE LIGHT

ADesignStudio | ALEX FITZPATRICK

Ever since I was introduced to Alberto Giacometti I have had a strong remnant back to his work. Recently I have been looking at both his drawings and sculptures. Giacometti’s work has been a visual and conceptional catalyst in experimenting with this new reductive approach to fitting design.

With a slim silhouette, luminaire grows upwards, mirroring the grounding base below with a custom extrusion. The BASEL was designed to be both functional and minimal, as it illuminates a space with a blanket of warm inviting light, the light source fades away into the environment. Illuminated with a diffused LED, BASEL is available in Black, White and Chrome.
